The nation's top security body has voted to recognize the establishment of nineteen fresh outposts in the occupied Palestinian territories, signaling a ongoing campaign for territorial growth.

Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in a settlement and put forward the step alongside Defense Chief Israel Katz, asserted that the approval was intended for thwarting the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Under international law, Jewish communities in the disputed territories are deemed illegal.

The announcement has sparked condemnation from Saudi Arabia. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that Israel's "relentless" growth of communities heightens frictions, restricts Palestinian use of land, and undermines the prospects of a independent Palestinian state.

Escalating Unrest and Political Fallout

Clashes in the occupied West Bank has surged since the hostilities in the Gaza Strip began in October 2023, adding to apprehensions that the growth of communities could entrench the Israeli presence and damage the possibility for a peaceful resolution based on two states.

The two-state solution refers to the establishment of a Palestinian state in the Palestinian territories, with Jerusalem's eastern sector as its capital, largely along the lines that existed before the 1967 Six-Day Arab-Israeli war.

Since taking office in 2022, the incumbent Israeli government has ramped up the green-lighting of new settlements and started the formal recognition for informal outposts, classifying them as "extensions" of existing communities.

Sustained Expansion

The latest decision brings the cumulative figure of settlements recognized over the preceding 36 months to sixty-nine, per the figures from the Finance Minister.

These authorizations are announced a short time after the United Nations said that construction in settlements had reached its highest level since 2017.

The latest group of authorizations includes the revival of a pair of settlements — Ganim and Kadim — which were dismantled almost two decades ago.

Previously, Israel authorized twenty-two new settlements in the occupied West Bank - what was the most significant wave of approvals in many years.

Furthermore, the government sanctioned blueprints last summer to construct in excess of 3,000 homes in the controversial E1 corridor between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim community, a plan that had been on hold for many years amid strong global condemnation.

On that occasion, Smotrich remarked it would "put to rest the notion of a Palestinian state."

It has also raised anxieties about the potential formal annexation of the occupied West Bank.

Ex- US President Donald Trump had once cautioned Israel about this step, telling TIME magazine that Israel would lose its backing from the United States if it proceeded.

In a policy change, the UK - together with other countries including Australia and Canada - formally recognized a Palestinian state, a major although primarily ceremonial shift in foreign policy.

The Israeli government strongly rejected this step, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserting that a Palestinian state "is off the table."
