The Brazilian forward has now notched 11 goals in all competitions for the club this campaign.

Match Summary

  • The home side were previously qualified to the play-offs.
  • A Ferencvaros defender own goal gives hosts a opening period lead.
  • Igor Jesus' European strike puts Forest in control.
  • Forward adds a third with a clinical effort in the second half.
  • James McAtee caps a great display with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker found the net on two occasions as the Premier League side rounded off the group stage of the Europa League with a convincing win against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

The hosts had previously guaranteed a place in the next qualifying round and went into this fixture with a slim possibility of reaching the league's elite, although they needed other matches to fall in their favor.

Those results failed to materialize but this confident performance will give Forest fans confidence that their team can navigate the home-and-away tie to advance to the last 16.

Kristoffer Zachariassen struck the upright with a headed effort inside the opening stages for the away team – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from then on.

Forest opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Ryan Yates' cross was deflected in by Bence Otvos and added a second shortly after – the striker firing an effort in at the back post for his tenth strike of the season.

Jesus' eleventh goal came early in the second half when he made a perfectly-timed run to break clear of the backline and then place a shot beyond the shot-stopper.

The third strike ended the visitors' hopes of mounting a recovery and instead the hosts scored again when the excellent McAtee converted a spot-kick after a infringement by the unfortunate Bence Otvos inside the box on the winger.

Europe's secondary club competition qualifying round lottery takes place on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Nottingham Forest might face either Fenerbahce or the Greek club.

"It's more than the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these players to do collectively well, the whole squad," said manager Sean Dyche.

"That was another step, but it is a positive one."

Forest Analysis: Striker Shines as Recent Arrival Observes from Stands

Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this term with six of his 11 goals coming in the tournament.

This double also means he has scored three goals in his last two games and the threat of a challenge for his position in attack could be providing motivation.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was recently signed on loan and he was watching this match from the stands.

This development may well have been on the striker's thoughts as he was impressive against the opposition, delivering two superb goals and overall being a menace to the visitors' defence with his pace and runs.

Jesus was not alone in impressing, with James McAtee turning in his best performance in a Nottingham Forest shirt since joining from Manchester City last summer, while Dan Ndoye also impressed.

These encouraging performances will give the club some renewed optimism as they switch focus to increasing the gap from the Premier League relegation zone when they host their London rivals on the weekend.

"The minimum requirement is a reaction," added Dyche.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their loyalty or honesty. It is just go and show your ability.

"McAtee was very good and Dan Ndoye was incredibly lively. Jesus got another couple and these are good signs."
