Government Cuts Back US Air Travel as Government Closure Stretches On

Amid the historic federal government closure nears day 38, US skies will become less congested. Contrastingly for US terminals.

Protective Actions Enacted

The federal aviation regulatory body stated air travel is being curtailed to ensure air traffic control safety during the federal government funding lapse, currently the lengthiest in history and with no sign of a resolution between Republicans and liberal officials to end the federal budget standoff.

Aviation authorities pinpointed “congested corridors” where the FAA says air traffic needs cutting by 4% by 6am ET on Friday, an action that will compel airlines to scrub numerous flights and create a series of scheduling problems and setbacks at major US air terminals.

Administration Remarks

The administration's transportation head, Sean Duffy, wrote on X Thursday that the move was “not about politics” but rather “involving evaluation the data and mitigating accumulating danger in the system as air traffic professionals continue working without pay”.

“Air travel remains secure today, tomorrow, and the day after because of the forward-thinking steps we are taking,” Duffy remarked.

Flight Cancellations

Experts predict hundreds if not thousands of flights may be scrapped. These reductions might account for as many as 1,800 flights and more than 268,000 seats collectively, according to an estimate by the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Affected Airports

The affected airports covering over 25 states include the highest-volume locations across the US – including ATL, North Carolina's city, Denver, DFW, Orlando, Los Angeles, Florida hotspot and SFO. Among key urban centers – like New York, Houston and Illinois hub – various airports will be affected.

The trio of airports serving the Washington DC area – Dulles Airport, BWI and DCA – will be affected, inevitably causing schedule changes for government officials as well as the flying public.
